As the population grows in Alaska, the need for commercial properties does too. Commercial property transactions have nearly doubled in the three years up to 2006. Large commercial space is more popular in the bigger cities, Fairbanks and Anchorage. Since there are so many smaller towns, commercial space is in the form of downtown buildings, converted houses and small buildings. Large corporations hang onto the ownership of the buildings and operate through a lease program to their tenants, who also manage the properties.
