The economy is very strong across most of New York. The unemployment rate has steadily declined in the years following 9/11. In 2005, it was at 5.5%. In 2006, it was down to 5.1%. Over 100 thousand jobs have been added every year since the year 2003. The jobs are in virtually every industry, from textiles, to manufacturing, agricultural, food processing and business and management positions. The statewide earnings average 2.9% growth each year.
Education is very important in the state of New York. With such a diverse population, testing standards have begun to show an improvement for all grade levels. The graduation rate is also climbing. In 1990, the rate was at 74.8%. In a decade, it has risen to 79.1%.
