Affordable rental units are a hot commodity in the state. Vermont's law on equal treatment of housing and town bylaws has changed, creating new opportunities for homeowner's to add an apartment to their house. The median rent in Vermont is around $460 a month. In addition, thousands of units of affordable rental housing have been built or preserved in Vermont due to the Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC). The Department works with the Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA) through the Joint Committee on Tax Credits, which allocates tax credits awarded to Vermont. The Vermont Interagency Council on Homelessness (VICH) is currently implementing a 10 year plan to eliminate all homeless in the state.
