1434 - Cosimo di Medici starts Medici rule in Florence.
1469 - Lorenzo The Magnificent rules in Florence.
1494 - Italy invaded by the French under Charles VIII.
1503 - Italian General Caesar Borgia defeated in Spain.
1515 - King Francis I of France takes Milan and Northern Italy.
1525 King Charles V of Hapsburg retakes Northern Italy from France.
1582 - Gregorian calendar is introduced by Pope Gregory XIII.
1601- The Treaty of Lyons was signed.
1605 - Venice and Spain nearly at war.
1706 - Battle of Turin
1707-1748 - Naples under Austrian viceroys.
1713 - Treaty of Utrecht, whereby the War of the Spanish Succession ends, the Kingdom of Naples was divided. Austria took the mainland Kingdom of Naples and Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy was given Sicily.
1713-1801 - Milan under control of Austria.
1718 - Treaty of Passarowitz whereby Venice cedes Morea to Turkey.
1720 - Spanish failed attack on Sicily.
1735 - Two sicilies became an independent monarchy under the branch of the Spanish Bourbon dynasty.
1738 - Treaty of Vienna whereby Don Carlos is made King of Naples and Sicily.
1748-1860 - Naples comes under the control of the Bourbons.
1768 - Corsica is ceded to France by Genoa.
1796 - Napoleon Bonaparte invades Italy and overthrows existing states.
1802 - Italian Republic (Northern Italy) founded, with Napoleon as President.
1805 - Napoleon is crowned King of Italy in Milan.
1814 - Defeat of Napoleon. He becomes King of Elba.
1815 - Austria regains control of Venice.
1820 - Revolt in Sicily, demanding independence from Naples.
1848 - The Venetians, revolt against Austrian rule and a new republic is established.
1856 - Italian National Society established.
1860 - The Kingdom of Naples is annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
1861 - Italy becomes a nation-state, when its city-states are united under King Victor Emmanuel.
1866 - War against Austria. Venice is incorporated into Italy.
1911 - Italy declares war on Turkey.
1912 - Turkey and Italy sign the Treaty of Ouchy.
1916 - Italy declares war on Germany.
1918 - Germany signs and World War I officially comes to an end.
1921 - Benito Mussolini is appointed and assumed dictatorial power.
1935 - Italy begins its invasion of Ethiopia.
1939 - Mussolini signs the Pact of Steal agreement with Hitler.
1940 - Italy enters World War II on Germany's side by declaring war on France and Great Britain.
1940 - Italy declares war on Greece & Albania.
1941 - Italy declares war on Russia & the US.
1943 - The Allies occupy Italy.
1944 - Italy declares war on Germany.
1947 - Italy signs peace treaty and gives up African coloniesand certain areas to France and Yugoslavia, and also return the Dodecanese Islands to Greece.
1955 - Italy becomes a member of the United Nations.
1958 - Italy joins the European Economic Community.
1993 - Italy joins the European Union (EU).
