History of Glass

Glass is chiefly mostly made of the ingredients of sand, soda and lime. It is created through the process of mixing large amounts of sand and small amounts of lime, soda and other materials.

Other ingredients can include alumina, white oxide of arsenic, lead oxide that affects glass quality. The glassmaker heats the mixture, until it is a syrupy mass. It is then shaped using different techniques including blowing, pressing, drawing and casting.

When it is cooled it is glass. Most glass is annealed (reheated and cooled) after shaping because the glass may shatter from tension caused by uneven cooling.
