Historically it was the Australian government initiatives that allowed all its citizens the opportunity for entry to universities in Australia through a number of routes. This may include high school education student ranking (students with highest academic scores), mature student education and TAFE accreditation.

The history of Australia universities begins with the opening of Sydney University in 1850 and at Melbourne University in 1853. Other Universities opened soon after, however it was not until the 1950s - 1970s when higher education in australia boomed and scores of universities and colleges were established.

Many universities in Australia have developed their own specialized area, because not every university offers the same courses. Some may offer medicine and dentistry while others may focus more on business, engineering or science.
